I knew he really liked the things I had done at the [Antwerp] Academy and there was one specific thing he kept referring to, even a decade later. For my graduation project I had made an uniform jacket out of protest banners. On the lapel I had glued a picture of the Tiananmen revolt and next to it, a picture of an axe, both cut out of a magazine. He thought that was really a great thing to do. He was one of the very few to realise that this gesture had been far more important than the jacket or the look itself. He just understood what I was about.
